1 more held in Mathura Traders killing and 12 Lakh worth jewellery recovered

Main accused interrogated in the case of killing of two jewellers earlier this month in Mathura.

Two traders were killed and two others injured during a robbery at jewellery shops in Koyalawali Gali in Mathura on May 15. Following interrogation of the kingpin of the gang, Rakesh, and his brother Kamesh, jewellery worth Rs 12 lakh, a mobile phone, Rs 30,000 in cash and other items were recovered from the house of their uncle, Harsh Vardhan, in Ratankund, SSP Vinod Kumar Mishra said.

Harsh Vardhan has been arrested since he had kept the looted items in his house, the officer said, adding one of the accused in the case, Rupesh, has committed suicide in Agra. Six armed men, who had come on motorbikes, had barged into the jewellery shops in the market in Mathura and opened fire, killing two persons, Vikas and Megh. Two others were injured in the incident.

The incident created a flutter in the state with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declaring in the Assembly that the case would be solved within three days. Four police personnels were suspended following the incident. On May 20, six persons were arrested for being involved in the incident.

Gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh, a pistol, 19 live and six empty cartridges, four country-made pistols, Rs 10,500 cash, seven mobile phones and other items were recovered from them on that day.
