South Africa, which until now was a major diamond mining hub, seems optimistic to strengthen its domestic diamond jewellery industry. To do so, it would have to cultivate its jewellery industry in demand, consumption and skills.
Being the fourth largest diamond producer in the world, currently only 4.8% of these diamonds are being cut within the country. The number of jewellery cutters and polishers in South Africa, are currently only 1700 compared to the half million skilled manpower in India.
South Africa estimates to employ 25000 cutters and polishers within ten years. For this, it would require to encourage cutting of smaller stones which bring about higher volumes, compared to the preferred larger stones. Simultaneously, artists need to found and educated in basic skills or highly specialised ones that may take from six months to six years, according to South African Diamond & Precious Metals Regulator GM Chris Callaghan.
Chris Callaghan estimates South Africa would have a growth rate of 10% per year, during the coming 10 years. It would cater to 70 000 people, if the demand for jewellery is nurtured.
