According to a news report in The Economic Times, the sale of diamond jewellery surpassed that of gold in India, during the Dhanteras festival. According to industry calculations, the sale of diamond jewellery were expected to surge higher by 70-80%.$$The World Gold Council (WGC), estimates that with the price of gold crossing the Rs.10,500-mark, although gold jewellery sales were not as exciting, the shopper is looking at investing in gold bars and coins.%%According to Gitanjali group chief operating officer, Dharmesh Bothra, “Although overall Dhanteras sales will edge up, soaring gold prices will impact sales. However, there is a marked increase in diamond jewellery and branded silverware sales this year.”$$On the retail front mega retail chains like Soppers’ Stop are anticipating jewellery sales to account for 10% of total sales.
