5 Indian Direct Members Elected
Earlier, Antwerp Diamond High Council (HRD) organized elections on May 3 and May 4 for six representatives of the diamond dealers in its Board of Directors. These elections marked the execution of the first phase of the restructuring of the umbrella organisation for the diamond sector. %% For the first time in the history of the HRD, which was established in 1973, some of the members of the Board of Directors have been elected directly by the diamond dealers themselves. %% True to tradition, the members of the Board of Directors were nominated by the 13 member-organisations of the umbrella organisation. %% The elections only concerned the mandates which are reserved for the diamond dealers. The representatives of the bourses and of the industry were appointed by the respective organisations, according to the old system. %%{{ Indians Secure Five Seats :}}$$ Of the approximately 1800 registered diamond dealers entitled to vote, 678 came forward to cast their vote. %% Five of the six mandates went to the Indian community. Amongst them Kaushik Mehta (Eurostar Diamond Traders) and Nishit Parikh (Diarough), both Sightholders of DTC. %% The list is completed by Mehul Kothari (Sushang Exporters), Nilang Mehta (Genesis Diamonds), Joshi Mukund (Belindiam) and Shimson Parnas (Arodiam Manufacturing Company), the only Jewish representative and Sightholder. %% Earlier, Jacky Roth, actual President of the HRD, Willy Rotti, President of the Diamond Club and David Wahl, President of the Diamantkring, were designated to represent the bourses in the Board of Directors. %% Stéphane Fischler and Michel Bovy, who were already members of the previous Board, will again represent the industry.%% The composition of the new Board of Directors as formally confirmed by the General Assembly on May 8, 2006 by the 13 member organisations.
{{Smooth Functioning Expected :}}$$ “The HRD hopes that the internal frictions of the last year will be eliminated as the diamond dealers are now directly involved in the organisation and that peace in the diamond sector will be restored. %% The actual composition of the Board of Directors, where 5 of the 12 mandates are filled by the members of the Indian community is a more correct reflection of the relations within the sector”, says Philip Claes, spokesman of the HRD.
