To mark the favourable day of Akshaya Tritiya, a special collection with a mix of heavy and light weight gold jewellery has been created and a Facebook contest launched.

The {{24th India International Jewellery Show (IIJS)}} 2007 unanimously acclaimed as the best so far, was inaugurated with great pomp and splendor by the Minister of State for Industries, {{Ashwani Kumar}}, while Sanjay Kothari – Chairman, Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) formally lit the customary lamp. Also present on the dais were Thai Commerce Minister, {{Krikkrai Jirapaet}}; {{Vasant Mehta}} Vice-Chairman and {{Arvind Pradhan}}, Executive Director, GJEPC. %% IIJS today has developed into a brand by becoming one of the key factors catalyzing the growth of the Indian gems and jewellery industry. It is one of the most ideal destinations for networking and sourcing the widest variety of precious products. %% IIJS has now become the fifth largest trade show in the world marking presence of 28,611 visitors out of whom 2,438 came from overseas, 740 exhibitors and 1,581 stalls. %% Besides individual overseas exhibitors, National Pavilions from Thailand, Dubai, Belgium, Italy etc. formed an impressive part of IIJS-2007. %% Keeping in mind the GJEPC’s drive to innovate and exceed the usual, the visual theme for this year’s IIJS was – ‘Origami and Illusions’. The graphics, the design of the venue, stalls and seminar halls all reflected the theme. IIJS-2007 was designed to surprise, delight and claim attention at every turn! What with 1,581 stalls, done up in fine designs and the eye-catching visuals, the GJEPC ensured that the gems and jewellery business at the IIJS-2007 was done in the environment it truly deserves.
Convention Centre for Mumbai:
In his keynote address at the inauguration function, {{Ashwani Kumar}} said, “The Indian gems and jewellery industry, having achieved great prominence globally in diamond cutting is facing the challenge of not only preserving the market share, but actually growing its value component and the brand equity of the ‘Made in India’ label.” He called on the industry to look inward and develop the huge domestic market. He announced that his Ministry would consider the prospect of developing a convention centre for Mumbai.
Support Sought:
Sanjay Kothari, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “Our gems and jewellery industry is in dire need of support such as fund availability at low interest rates and compensation to cover losses, as a consequence of the rupee appreciation and withdrawal of the GSP”. Kothari also expressed that the GJEPC in line with its new strategy, is reaching new emerging markets and is establishing India’s ability to supply niche segments such as high-end jewellery to the luxury section.
Turnout Beyond Expectations!
The IIJS-2007 saw a staggering turnout which exceeded the expected number of 25,000 visitors. The record number of pre-registrations touched the figure of 17,000. %% {{Kamal Nath}}, Minister of Commerce & Industry had this to say about the IIJS-2007, “Gems and jewellery are most important components of India’s export basket. They have really established Brand India on global canvas. It is heartening to note that the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s consistent efforts have helped in establishing IIJS as a premium international show.”
Exhibitors Exuberant:
The IIJS has been incredible in terms of networking and generating business. All across the board exhibitors said they had bulging order-books from clients all over India and overseas markets including the Middle-East, Eastern-Europe and CIS nations.
Centre of Attraction for Foreign Operators:
The IIJS has become the benchmark Show for the entire Indian gems and jewellery industry, not to mention, quite a trendsetter! With a strong rupee and continuing economic growth, the Indian market is now extremely interesting for even overseas jewellery industry players – manufactures, retailers, equipment makers and allied service providers all eagerly want to do business in India. The IIJS provides the best gateway into the country for them. The IIJS today is the fifth largest trade show in the world with a higher ranking if the watch industry components are not taken into reckoning.
Widest Selection at IIJS:
With demand growing for newer and more global jewellery set with diamonds and colored gemstones, Indian retailers have found that the IIJS is the place with the widest selection of the latest trends and most innovative products.

Thailand, China, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran and Hungary.
Overseas Buyer-Seller Meets Planned:
Delegates from various countries had interactive meetings with the Council officials, emphasizing strengthening the bilateral trade relations between India and the respective country in the gems and jewellery sector. In a fruitful discussion with Chinese delegation Council has planned a “Diamond and Color Gemstone Buyer-Seller Meet” in Shanghai from December 12 to 14, 2007. The BSM is exclusively planned for Indian Exhibitors and will provide a platform to Indian and Chinese counterparts to meet on one to-one basis. Similarly an exhibition is being planned in Iran exclusively for Indian exhibitors.
‘Mines to Market’ Conference in Thailand:
Indian gems and jewellery industry in close coordination with Thailand Gem & Jewellery Traders Association is organizing a ‘Mines to Market Conference’ for color gemstones in 2008. %% In a meeting with delegates from Bangladesh visa issues and duty on Exports from India were discussed.
Seminars at IIJS:
The IIJS-2007, being an all – round gems and jewellery Show did not merely focus on exhibiting jewellery, but also imparted information and news on the industry through the seminars and forums.
Events at IIJS:
Subbirami Reddy, Minister of State for Mines, Govt. of India addressed the Press at a gathering. He said, “The new Mining Policy announced by the Government of India will be without any red tapism, translating to automatic mining lease from one stage to another. The new Mining policy can transfer the lease to another company who is more proficient in the next stage of Mining”. %% The minister emphasized that it was his intention to remove all delays in the processing of mining permits required in the country. His endeavour is to ensure that production is maximized in as short a time as possible. In this regard, he is working with the State Governments to ensure that the Union-State Intergovernmental procedural delays do not hold up any mining projects.
Solitaire Design Awards 2007:
This year’s Solitaire Awards ceremony attracted some of the finest design talents from across the country. Over 50 companies presented an impressive array of nearly 300 entries for the competition. The theme this year was ‘India’ with 3 categories: %% 1. {{India Traditional,}} $$ 2. {{India Global,}} $$ 3. {{India Futuristic.}} %% Some of the winners in the categories were Sama, B.N. Jewellers, Royal Chains, Fine Jewellery (India) Ltd, Kinu Baba Gems Pvt. Ltd., Jewels Emporium, PRA-MAK, and DiaMande.
{{Superb Fashion Show:The highlight of the IIJS every year- the Fashion Show, at the 2007 Show too thrilled the audience with an enthralling display of some of the most beautifully designed and crafted jewellery, worn by India’s top models. The theme of the show was decided keeping in mind the almost surreal splendor of gems such as diamonds and rubies. The theme encapsulated fantasy and a spell-binding reality in the display, lighting and visuals of the show. $$ The Fashion Show was divided into three sections: Reflections, Illusions and Search.}} %% ‘Reflections’ featured top-end diamond jewellery, ‘Illusions’ presented gold and colored gemstones jewellery and ‘Search’ highlighted a range of silver jewellery. %% Goa’s Ex-Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane, accompanied by his family, was the Chief Guest at the evening function. The General Manager, State Bank of India, Anuradha Thakur was the Guest of Honour. She said, “We are proud to be associated with the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and I congratulate them for arranging such a grand event.” %% The Show’s jewellery was sponsored by Sama, A Star Jewellery, Auro Gold, CVM Exports, Gaja, Silvex Images, Derewala and Eros.
Highlights:
Jewellery Designers Council:
GJEPC Chairman Sanjay Kothari inaugurated the Jewellery Designers Council of India (JDCI) at the IIJS. JDCI will represent the interest of jewellery designers and work for the development and growth of the jewellery industry.
Indo – Thai ‘Prakriti’
At the IIJS fashion event sponsored by the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders’ Association, an agreement was signed on stage to jointly market a range of Thai colored gemstones under the ‘Prakriti’ label. The agreement was signed by Boonyong Assarasakorn on behalf of the Thai India Colorstone Co. and Pravin Shankar Pandya on behalf of Diamonds India Ltd. The Thai Commerce Minister was also present on the occasion. $$ Necklace with Live Siamese Fish ! %% IIJS witnessed a unique piece of jewellery, a necklace, shaped in the form of an island with two live Siamese fighting fish swimming in a clear acrylic centre! Lining the centre were gold nuggets, rough and black diamonds and colored gemstones. Tahitian pearls and a gem set scuba diver added to the grandeur of this unusual piece.
Traditional Pavilion- Zebaaish:
This year’s traditional pavilion Zebaaish was set up by the Council in collaboration with National Institute of Design (NID). The pavilion featured exquisite jewellery made by traditional technique of ‘Filigree’.
Jewellery of Abstract Concepts:
Students of National Institute of Fashion Technology presented jewellery of abstract concepts such as emotions, hallucinations, shapes and reinvention of iconic symbols.
Launching of Special Credit Card:
A special Platinum Credit Card was launched by ICICI Bank for Council members. The card offers host of benefits such as Rs. 20 lakh credit limit, generous rewards on Airlines, Hotels etc. Members can use this credit card for IIJS transactions from next year.
Conclusion of the IIJS-2007:
The IIJS-2007 proved to be a memorable event, successful beyond expectations of the organizers, visitors and the media. While the Show management was looking at a total turnout of around 25,000, the actual response to the Show has been so overwhelming that this figure was crossed on the 3rd day itself! The IIJS has been a resounding success not only in terms of design or creative talent but also in the business it generated. $$ The visitors and the exhibitors were highly impressed with the organization, the logistics, the management and the business environment at the Show.

India is a huge market and we are looking at the jewellery here to get the feel. The Show seemed to be the best place to do this.” %% A Smet, International Diamond Laboraties Antwerp, “We are happy to be here. We have just launched our Mumbai operations. We chose Mumbai over Dubai as India is a growing market.” %% An exhibitor at the Italian Pavilion, “The Show is getting better year after year. The facilities are good and no complaints whatsoever. We made some new clients this year and the IIJS proved to be fruitful for us.” %% Kazuo Ogawa, Designer, Tokyo, “There is going to be an Indian wave in Japan. The variety and vibrancy of the jewellery available here will definitely attract the Japanese customers.” %% Umesh Ganjam, Ganjam Group Bangalore, India, “The IIJS is very productive Show for us. I am able to reinforce relationships and also keep track of retail trends. This is the only event at which one can accomplish so much in a few days.” %% Nemer Abou Samra, Sidra, Lebanon, “This is my first visit to this Show, I deal in jewellery mountings and the response here has been really good.” $$ Vinod Lunia, N.M. creations, Mumbai, India, “My main market is Persian Gulf and I find here a lot of buyers from overseas, especially from Middle-East. The Show truly rocks.”
Opinion Poll of Attendees:
‘Diamond World’ conducted a comprehensive survey in its daily Show Supplements to gauge the opinion of the exhibitors about the IIJS-2007. $$ The questions asked and the response received: {[How has the Show been for you? ][Nearly 18% respondents thought the Show to be ‘Outstanding’; 61% called it ‘Very Good’ and most of the rest considered it as ‘Good’.][Are you satisfied with the domestic presence in the Show?][74% exhibitors replied positively, 18% felt the need for more of quality buyers. Only 4% expressed dissatisfaction. Was the Show successful in drawing international buyers?]About 40% said ‘Yes’; 35.71% - ‘No’ and only 14.29% considered the Show as ‘Not upto expectations’. Are you satisfied with the security arrangements and freight services at the Show?][Only a small number, 3.57% did not seem to be satisfied with the arrangements.][Are you satisfied with the logistics, food and beverages arrangements?][67.85% replied positively; only 7.14% expressed dissatisfaction and 17.86% said, “More options should be added for edibles.”. Do you think IIJS gives value to your money ?][53.57% said, ‘It is justified if we greet ample foreign buyers’. 17.86% said, “Yes, it couldn’t be any better." $$ For 10.71%, “IIJS is an internationally acclaimed Show still much lower in cost than other major Shows worldwide”. Only 7.14% felt the cost should be lower to enable small and medium players also to get a display platform.][Are you satisfied with the facilities at the Show?][46.43% expressed satisfaction whereas 10.71% did not. 32.14% felt, “There is scope for improvement.” ]}
