The diamond industry in Surat is taking an unusually long vacation this year, as there is almost no work coming its way. Many factories in the city have granted a 45-day Diwali holiday to their employees, much before what would usually be a 30 day vacation beginning from the Diwali festival. The economic crisis has hard hit work at Suart’s diamond industry, where otherwise, nearly 90 per cent of the diamonds of the world are cut and polished. %% As reported by the Economic Times, the exporters of studded diamond jewellery are facing difficulty. With most of the rough diamond players settled in the US, trade is not very bright this time of the year. Most of the diamond exporters in Suart and Mumbai seem to have closed their respective offices in New York and Los Angeles. %% With the uncertainty, the workers seem to be opting for other professions like agriculture back in their home town. The diamond traders and manufacturers too are looking at alternate sources of income, to bear the rough weather of date. Some have ventured into textile businesses.%% The media reports that as per Surat Diamond Association, the city houses around 4,200 diamond factories employing over 6 lakh people.
