{{|*Diamond World: *|Your family is in the wholesale business of loose diamonds. When and how did you enter jewellery designing and retail?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} Yes, Diamonds is our family business. Around 15 years ago I did an intensive course in gemmology and jewellery designing from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Los Angeles. After coming back, we decided to branch out into jewellery. I was handed over the responsibility of jewellery manufacturing. During the initial phase we started on a small scale supplying jewellery to other stores. Eventually ten years ago, I started my first retail outlet, as reaching the end consumer seemed to be more viable proposition as compared to supplying to a few stores. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| So how was the transition from diamonds wholesale to jewellery retailing and designing?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} After returning from the US, I realised that the jewellery trends in India are quite different from those in the West. I had to work around these concepts of Indo-western styles, lots of gemstones. In fact the transition took three to four years before I shifted from loose diamonds to jewellery and took up designing and manufacturing of jewellery. %%
{{|*Diamond World: *|What kind of jewellery do you specialize in?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We specialize in heavy bridal jewellery. You would find a variety of bridal jewellery when you come to us. However, if you visit us for smaller pieces it might not be fruitful. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| What are the elements that you use in your jewellery?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We use a lot of gold and various varieties of gold such as yellow, white and pink gold. With our recent collection we have even used black, polished gold for our jewellery. While most of our jewellery are pieces diamond studded, we do use other gemstones such as rubies, emeralds, sapphires, corals, tourmalines and amber. We have even used wood in our jewellery! It depends on what is trendy and fashionable in the market. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| Where do you get your inspiration from?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We do have themes for every season. We pick up one aspect of any one subject, be it nature, a chemical composition or even ancient history. Our recent collection is based on ancient India. So a temple pillar or a palace could be the source of design for our jewellery. %%
{{|*Diamond World:*| What are the current trends in the market? }}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} People are wearing chunkier bracelets and lighter mid-length earrings in this particular season. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| Please tell us about your latest collection}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} Our latest collection titled {{Inde-discovering India }}is based on an ancient Indian theme. It has a lot of gold and antique work, lot of rose cut with a mixture of diamonds and |*jadau *|pieces, various gemstones such as emeralds, rubies and south sea pearls, beads. The jewellery is versatile and can be worn with different outfits. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| You have a retail outlet in Dubai and two outlets in Mumbai – Bandra and South Mumbai. Why did you chose Dubai as compared to other places? How different are the trends in Dubai and Mumbai? }}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We chose Dubai due to its proximity and the presence of some of our clientele there. We export to Dubai on a larger scale. In Dubai, people prefer more ostentatious pieces. Within Mumbai the trends vary from area to area. In Bandra, people have a liking for a little less chunky jewellery as compared to Dubai. The bling thing is more prevalent in Bandra. On the other hand, in Southern Mumbai, the choice is more subtle, simpler and classier. %%
{{|*Diamond World: *|Can you tell us about some of the accolades and awards that you have won over the years?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} Frankly speaking, we are yet to win any awards. %% {{|*Diamond World:*| What are your future plans?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We are planning to launch a bigger store in Bandra Mumbai next year. %% {{|*Diamond World: *|What, according to you, sets Satyani’s apart from other designer jewellery brands?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} We believe that we are different in workmanship and creative thoughts. We like to experiment with new designs using different meshes of gold and gemstones. Fortunately, our clientele understand the kind of jewellery we make and are comfortable wearing those pieces. We do carry a lot of one kind of pieces. We are more focused on giving value to customers by ensuring to give them good designs but not at the most reasonable and affordable prices. We believe in higher turnover more than focusing on higher margins. We try to satisfy the customer’s needs.%% {{|*Diamond World:*| What is your motto when it comes to jewellery?}}%% {{|*Shravan Satyani:*|}} Keep your margins modest and sell more pieces.
