Gaetano Cavalieri, the president of CIBJO was one amongst 2,000 representatives of the business community, civil society and government participating in the Leaders Summit of the UN Global Compact, discussing corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards sustainability and protecting human rights. %% In his opinion, Cavalieri said, "It was a fascinating event, which provided us with the opportunity to see how Corporate Social Responsibility is being applied in other business sectors. What I learned was that in many respects the jewellery sector is ahead of the game, both in terms of mitigating issues concerning human rights, labour relations and the environment, and also in terms of investing in the economic growth of the communities in which operate. We have a positive story to tell, and the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit provided that opportunity." %% The Summit took place from June 23-25, 2010 to review the 10th anniversary since the founding of Global Compact. Global Compact endeavoured in aligning companies with UN agencies, labour and civil society, to support universal environmental and social tenets, calling for the support of 10 principles centred around human rights, labour standards, the environment and battle against corruption. CIBJO formally joined the organisation in November 2006.%% The Summit encouraged dialogue amongst delegates from the various business sectors.
