In the second quarter of 2010, Rio Tinto noted an increase in its diamond production, both at an overall level and at its individual mines, in comparison to the corresponding period of 2009. Total diamond production in Q2’10 increased 182 percent to 3.61 million carats. %% The Argyle mine generated production worth 2.608 million carats, a 538 percent increase Y-o-Y. The mine is fully owned by the company, which also owns 60 percent of Diavik mine in Canada and 77.8 percent stake in the Murowa mine in Zimbabwe. %% Production at Diavik rose 13 percent y-o-y to 1.612 million carats in which, the company’s share amounted to 967,000 carats, and by 88 percent to 49,000 carats at Murowa, in which the company’s share amounted to 38,000 carats. %% Rio Tinto attributes the increased production to a comeback of positive market sentiments, which has also caused production to resume to normal levels at its Argyle mine which had temporarily shut operations in the slowdown of 2009.
