|*A little more than a decade old, Surat’s D Khushalbhai Jewellers has firmly entrenched itself in the jewellery trade of the city. Standing testimony to their progress and growth is the imposing and sprawling new showroom that opened a few months ago. Located in the very heart of Surat, in the famed Parle Point area of India’s diamond hub, the jewellery mall, as it is more fittingly called, is as magnificent on the outside as it is on the inside. {{Roli Gupta}} comes away impressed, not just with the sheer variety of jewellery and objets d'art, but also with the facilities and amenities aimed at providing customers with every possible comfort they could desire.*| %% One enters the store via the magnificent reception area, looks up and sees thousands of crystal balls adorn the ceiling, and the “Come and be pampered” message is manifest almost immediately. Evidently, a lot of thought and planning have gone into the making of this jewellery mall. The showroom has three floors, each more than 5000 sq.ft. in size and nicely sectioned out according to the type of jewellery; an Indo-Western interior design that appropriately matches the opulence of the jewellery on display; smartly turned out, courteous staff in blue blazers and cream shirts; designated areas for a children’s room, a bridal lounge, an NRI area; hi-tech machinery including a karatometer and even an innovative touchscreen computer that allows customers to try out jewellery virtually. %% The business is managed by Dipak Chokshi and Viren Chokshi, sons of founder Mrs. Khushalbhai Chokshi. “We have been in the trade since 1997, and this new jewellery showroom was one step towards taking the D Khushalbhai name forward. We wanted to showcase our jewellery to the entire country. The three-storey mall has a huge variety available to suit every pocket and requirement – we have gold jewellery on the first floor, diamond jewellery on the second, while the third floor houses the men’s jewellery and one gramme gold jewellery,” explains Dipak.%% Apart from this general segregation, each area is further divided according to the jewellery type. There are separate counters for pendants, earrings, rings, bracelets, chains, mangalsutras, watches, bangles, full sets and so on. “We also stock up on women’s jewellery like nose pins, diamond belt buckles, hair pins, maang teekas et al. The customer is very discerning and demands a variety of styles in jewellery – so we have both the traditional and contemporary styles in jewellery as well as the styles belonging to different regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat and South India amongst others.” Dipak elucidates further. %% There’s more – the children’s jewellery range has pendants with different characters from the ever-popular Disney stable of characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and the current teen favourite Hannah Montana. Men need not feel left out either – apart from the usual watch, ring, bracelet and ear stud, there are shirt buttons, tie pins, cufflinks, belt buckles and mobile accessories like covers and danglers on offer. Silver jewellery and artifacts occupy an important chunk of the floor space, while the platinum and branded jewellery section complete the mix.%% Besides catering to every possible jewelllery requirement, the Chokshis were intent on providing the best possible shopping experience to customers. This reflects in every aspect of the mall. For starters, consider the décor. Explains Virenbhai, “We used an Indo-Western look as it blends the modern and the traditional effectively. Customers looking for modern designs and customers looking for traditional pieces – both sections find the ambience comfortable. The gold jewellery displays have lighter coloured interiors with yellow LED lighting that brings out the splendour of gold jewellery. For the diamond counters the lighting is all white, while the interior is in red – making the diamond jewellery look all the more attractive. “%%
It’s not just the jewellery or the décor that is remarkable - there are objects of art that provide focal points of interest. The silver swing, silver dining table set and silver sofa set, add grandeur to the mall. Another unique area is the museum – this houses very large precious and semi-precious gemstones in all their uncut glory, fascinating for the amateur and professional gemstone enthusiast.%% The different sections of the store are another indicator of the in-depth execution of the whole “customer is queen (or in the case of men’s jewellery, king)” philosophy. While the kid’s area keeps children entertained as their parents shop to their heart’s content, the NRI lounge specially caters to customers from abroad. The bridal lounge is done up beautifully in pink and gold – colours that add to the shopping experience for the bride-to-be and her family.%% The gold testing room with the karatometer allows customers to see for themselves the purity of the jewellery that D Khushalbhai offers. What is particularly interesting is the novel touchscreen machine. Speaking about it, Viren explains, “See, all jewellers have actual jewellery pieces on display which the customer can physically try out. Then there are catalogues of jewellery that is not on display but is in stock or can be made to order. Having said that, nothing makes the customer feel more confident when making a purchase than “trying out” jewellery. We thought, if not physically, why not give the customer access to a ‘virtual trying out’ of jewellery that she likes. So, we imported and installed this touchscreen machine which allows users to view all the jewellery in our inventory. Using a camera, the machine allows customers to view their images wearing the jewellery.”%%
Staff training is an inevitably important part of the overall shopping experience, and at D Khushalbhai Jewellers, both soft skills and technical training are mandatory for the staff. And this training and education is evident in the graciousness and politeness of the ever-considerate and ever-attentive staff.%% Deservedly, the inauguration of a mall like this saw the bigwigs of the trade in attendance. It was none other than Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi who did the honours. “The inauguration was a huge success, and we were indeed honoured to have prominent members of the GJF, GJEPC and other leading lights of the industry came out to support us wholeheartedly. Of course Narendrabhai cutting the ribbon was nothing short of a dream come true,” reminisces a proud Viren Chokshi. “In fact, for an entire month, we had a special celebration for our customers with discounts and offers galore”. Several celebrities from the Indian television and film world have frequented the store too.%% D Khushalbhai Jewellers have been the recipients of several export awards. Most recently they were awarded in the silver jewellery category at the IJ Retailers Choice Design Awards 2011. All of these accolades and recognition speak volumes for their professional and innovative approach to manufacturing and selling jewellery. And if this current endeavor and their past record is anything to go by, the jewellery house that is a place “Where the seekers of quality meet the makers” looks to be well on its way to greater glory and success.%%
