INDIAN jewelry designer Gopal Roy stood first place in the Gemological Institute of Americas sponsored George A. Schuetz design competition. Roys winning entry consists of two rings of white gold shank joined with yellow gold bars capped by bezel-set round diamonds. The center stone is an Asscher-cut ruby with two long diamond baguettes set on each side. Roy, was awarded a cash prize of $500 and a circular-faceted trophy with his name etched in it.%%Named for mens jewelry designer and entrepreneur George A. Schuetz, the competition recognizes the best original designs in mens jewelry and accessories. All entries were judged based upon design, wearability, manufacturability, and appeal by a panel of independent industry specialists%%The competition fielded some 135 international entries of which two designers from South Korea took second and third place. Minjung Oh of Seoul placed second with her ring and pendant design made of 18-karat white gold, onyx, melee diamonds, and black rubber.%%Young-Im Jeon earned third place for her ring design of white and yellow gold, lapis lazuli, onyx, and melee diamonds. Jeons goal was to create a piece of art that captured the "beauty of stillness yet could be worn as jewelry."
