For more than two decades, Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair has continued to establish itself as a professional trade event of choice. Thailand has had a reputation for its craftsmanship and the ability in applying an ancient tradition with modern technology to achieve perfection in the production of impressive jewellery and jewels. Indeed, the best place to explore the good part of Thailand 's distinctiveness is at the bi-annual Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF). The 51st BGJF culminated today but was lackluster.%% Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair is a dynamic place to conduct good business and network with over 1,200 exhibitors in 16 key product categories and thousands of international jewellers and traders pursuing supplies. It is organised twice a year, in March and September, at the Impact Challenger, with more than 3,500 stalls spread over 80,000 square meter in a single-floor layout, BGJF has been a vibrant marketplace where over 1,200 exhibitors from over 35 countries such as UK, Italy, Russia, USA, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel, etc. participate in each BGJF which attracts 35,000 international delegates and visitors. But this year the story was a bit different. The fair saw 15 per cent of less booths and a considerable decrease in footfalls.%% Most exhibitors felt that the close proximity of dates between the Signature Mumbai and Hong Kong Show has dampened the spirit of BGJF this year. The China International Gold Jewellery & Gem Fair- Shenzhen was also organized o the same dates as BGJF dividing the buyers and causing the loss in footfalls.%% Adding to the woes was the suspension of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Thailand on jewellery that made the Indian jewellers to shy away from buying jewellery at the show this year. The volatility in gold prices also hampered the jewellery buying sentiment.%% TGJTA President Mr. Somchai Phornchindarak stated that they are in discussion with Indian counterparts and are planning to send a team to India to talk to Indian authorities to ensure that jewellery stays in FTA. %% The gemstones witnessed a good business as the prices are strong and very less replacement of rough is easily available. China stood out to be one of the most important buyers for the gemstone segment.
