It all started with designing a few pieces for myself that were greatly admired by my friends and family. It later started converting into orders for designs and before long without even realising; it became a full-fledged career. I have also received formal training in jewellery designing from the Diamond Institute of Mumbai.” . After taking orders from friends and family, Maheep joined hands with Satyani Fine Jewels to tap into the deeper potential of designer jewellery in India. She has also designed for Karan Johar’s hit film, KabhiAlvida Na Kehna. When asked to share her glitzy achievements in the industry, she takes us down the memory lane. “I have spent years in the industry now and have got opportunities to design for celebrities like ShabanaAzmi, JayaBachchan and ShilpaShetty. I also have catered to the divas of Bollywood like Priyanka Chopra, KareenaKapoor, Soha Ali Khan, amongst others. I have had the opportunity to design jewellery for many celebrity guests on Koffee with Karan. In 2011, I tied up with Satyani Fine Jewels and launched my first exclusive collection with them. When asked to share some interesting incidences regarding the Bollywood beauties and their personal preferences, she states, “Well, each of my client has been an unique experience from one another. Their taste and their needs are different in their own ways. So everyone has been interesting in some or the other way. As I majorly design for public figures, I would not want to name any particular client.” . We tried to steer the conversation to the personal side of Maheep to get a glimpse of her casual side but the lady is entirely in love with jewellery and with each passing question, the conversation remained about it. She shares with us her learning from the jewellery industry, “Jewellery is a very important aspect of a woman’s personality. It can make or break the look. At the same time, the industry is evolving at a very rapid pace. It is essential to not only be updated with the global trends but also be fashion forward and be skilled enough to forecast trends. Persistency is the key.” . When asked to describe the kind of woman who would wear her creation, pat comes the reply, “Classy independent and fashion forward.” She further explains, “I design jewellery for modern Indian women who are young, confident and independent. My designs are contemporary and yet classic. Anyone who is a trendsetter is the wearer of my collection. My collections do not just involve usual gold jewellery but I create timeless statement pieces using myriad materials.” . As we all know Maheep is a public figure and her appearance is as important as her creativity and passion. She is one of the most impeccably dressed Bollywood celebrities and carries Indian and western wear with equal panache, but what are her preferences when it comes to jewellery? “I love adorning myself and I keep experimenting with my looks and the jewellery I wear. It keeps changing from time to time, However, most of the times I like wearing one statement piece on a plain outfit instead of wearing too much of jewellery,” she states. . Jewellery designing is not a cake walk and no matter how renowned or experienced a jewellery designer is, he/she faces difficulties in its process from time to time but Maheep corrects us and says that the real difficulty is in manufacturing what is envisioned by the designer. “Every piece needs utmost attention. As a designer, as I said earlier, I don’t feel that I face any difficulties while designing. It’s a vision you have once when you get an inspiration from somewhere and you create that. Though manufacturing and physical creation is a tough task, I enjoy every bit of the process. Sure, difficulty comes when I don’t see justice happening to my designs while manufacturing the jewellery. However, since my association with SatyaniFine Jewels, that hurdle has been trounced,” she articulates. .

One look at Maheep’s designs and the extensive use of varied materials is prominent. As she mentioned earlier, she loves to experiments with myriad of materials but she also has her favourite in it. “I love using the yellow metal and playing with creating various textures on it. I love it because it is flexible, it matches with Indian skin tone and it syncs well with my style of jewellery which is traditional yet modish,” she informs. . We did not give up on trying to get to know the casual facet of Maheep and asked her about her hobbies beyond jewellery designing. To this she says, “My work is my hobby. I also enjoy shopping and going to various places and seeing the kind of jewellery that is made globally.” . It is time to wrap up our conversation with the design diva as she is ready to take on her day filled with creativity, design, innovation and experimentation but we ask her for a quick advice for our budding designers in the industry. She suggests, “Apart from being talented it is also important to be hardworking and persistence. The industry is full of endowed individuals therefore patience and persistency along with talent is the ideal combination to achieve success.” .
