Nation-wide jewellers' strike to continue till March 7

The silent agitations and protests continue as the strike enters its 3rd day.

She is young, vivacious, stylish and independent. She made her foray in the industry just three years ago, but already has made the industry take a notice. She is none other than Priti Bhatia, Founder of Awesome Sparklers. Priti is a keen observer and she is also exuberant and edgy, just like her jewellery designs that have made her won many accolades. Priyanka Desai meets up with this young designer to know her story. %% Once a wise woman said, “Life is too short to wear boring jewellery,” and we think there are only handful of Indian jewellery designers who have understood this saying. But, those who have understood are well on their way to become the master of the game, by creating jewellery so exhilarating that it can leave an impression for the next few lives. One such designer is Priti Bhatia, who though just three years old in this gleaming industry, has already paved her way to the top. When we asked Priti about her inspiration for creating unique and innovative jewel masterpieces, she quipped, “Nature inspires me a lot for designing my jewellery. The elements of nature like leaves, petals, flowers, water drops,etc., have a lot more to say and I like to capture this in my jewellery creation. Also, good creations by others in the industry is also a source of inspiration for me.”%% Priti has always been fascinated by unique jewellery pieces and since she was a teenager,a she was perpetually on a scout for breathtaking jewellery. It was just a few years back that she started dabbling with design and answered her calling for creation. Once she was sure that this hobby of hers was something more and something substantial, she decided to get professionally trained in this field. Priti is a graduate from IGI and GIA. “I had a passion to do something big from the beginning. Different and unique designs in jewellery have always inspired me. I kept searching for new designs of jewellery. During this search one thing led to another and here I am,” she shares with a smile. %% The real parameters of success are family’s support and pride, Priti believes. Her family has been a constant support for her and she owes all her success to her parents. Talking more about her parents, she says, “My family has been very supportive from the beginning. When I had just started out, my mother had supported me in every tiny step. She travelled along with me all over the world. She has been by my side in each exhibition I have attended. She is also the best person who sells my jewellery, efficiently. My father on the other hand,has always been a great teacher. He advises me from time to time. It is noteworthy to mention here that I do not take any decision without discussing it with my father.” %%
Describing a recent collection, Priti articulates, “The most recent collection that is close to my heart is collection ‘Monarch’. As the name suggests, our collection, Monarch is inspired by a palace’s grandeur and splendour. The idea started with the basic traditional designs and with my creativity, I added a modern touch to the designs.Contemporary designs with an ancient touch relating to the times of great emperors have always been a great source of inspiration for me. The collection turned out to be breathtaking with a pure blend of past with the present.” %% On the road to success, various milestones welcomed Priti but the biggest achievement of all would be that Awesome Sparklers is among Top 5 jewellery brands in Surat. Priti believes that this success was due to immense mouth publicity and unique products. Priti was also nominated amongst the top 3 for ‘Best Women Entrepreneur’ category in 2013, by GJEPC. She was also the finalist in the ‘Best Bracelet’ category in IJ-JJS Awards, 2013. She was amongst the top 5 at the national level in the category of ‘Innovative Jewellery of the year’ in National Retail Jewellery Awards.Priti has won the ‘Best Jewellery Design Award’ for the year 2012 by GJF, India. ‘The Times Group’ has awarded Awesome Sparklers’ jewellery as the best jewellery of 2012. %% When asked to describe the kind of woman who adorns Awesome Sparklers’ jewellery, she said, “I would love to see all kinds of women wearing my jewellery pieces. My collections are not limited to a specific genre. They have something for everyone.” Talking about her personal preferences when it comes to jewellery and fashion, she expresses, “I personally prefer sophisticated and classic jewellery, which can also be passed on to the coming generation. About personal dressing, sometimes I like adorning a completely Indian ensemble and sometimes it’s all about the western me.” %% Talking about her learning from the industry, she shares, “From my experience of three years, I have learnt that it is the customers’ response that encourages any company to grow. Also, honesty as well as transparency is the driving force that helps in making the customers have faith in you.” %% On asking if she uses any traditional Indian techniques in her jewellery creation process, she declines and explains, “All my manufacturing is done through CAD (computer-aided designing) which gives the jewellery piece, an excellent finishing. CAD also helps in manufacturing lightweight jewellery.” %%
Talking about the most difficult jewellery piece that she has created, she shares, “I had made a necklace based on the theme of forest. The design was inspired by unity in the forest between trees and leaves. For example, how the leaves hold on to each other till eternity. To give the natural look to the necklace, it took me four and a half months to complete it.” Sharing more about the most difficult aspect of jewellery design, she states, “According to me, the most difficult aspect in the jewellery creation process is the last step of getting the actual piece made into reality exactly as it is designed on paper.” %% Priti’s love for jewellery and jewels is prominent, as the sparkle in her eyes never rests when talking about jwellery. Her childlike enthusiasm for jewellery making is contagious and the conversation remains centered upon jewellery and jewels. “I love to add pearls and gemstones in my jewellery pieces. Using stones and pearls are very cost effective and they also give a trendy touch to the jewellery,” she explains when asked about her favourite materials to work with. %% Time is running out and we have to ask Priti our last question in a hurry.
