Ever since the ease of the UN sanctions on Liberia, the first consignment of diamonds has left Liberia last week. The consignment is valued at $222,000, as mentioned by government spokesman Laurence Bropleh. Details of the exporting company or shipment's destination have not been divulged.
The United Nations imposed sanctions on Liberia's diamonds in May 2001, to stop slae of ‘blood diamonds’. The Liberian government had placed a moratorium on all mining. With the UN lifting its sanctions in April, the Liberian government did away with its moratorium in late July. The Liberian government, according to Gabriel Williams, a deputy government spokesman, has received $6,000 as royalty from the shipment.
