The Diamond Trading Company (DTC) has presented its eight sight of 2008 with some stability in prices and assortment of diamonds supplied by De Beers. Yet, sightholders did not show enthusiasm, some even considering returning the entire or part of the supplies. The discontent has been floating due to recent fluctuations in prices. The sight had an estimated value of $600 million, and there was some ex-plan. %% The rise in polished diamond prices did not increase at the same pace as that of the rough diamonds (as announced by DTC Sight in July’08), which caused manufacturers to now wonder about their unsold lots of polished diamonds. With this backlog, some sightholders rejected goods of the eight sight and one company sent back 20 percent of the goods mainly larger goods, pointer sizes, 4-to-8 grainers. %% The dimantaires showed dissatisfaction due to products being sold at list prices, with small premium margins. Also, the sightholders expect a better assortment of diamonds in the next sight. %% DTC had increased prices in July by an average 5 percent and up to 15 percent on larger goods. For the eight months till August 2008, the prices increased by a cumulative 16 percent on average and for the year to date, the total DTC sight values have grown about 2 percent to $5.15 billion, compared with the first eight sights of 2007. The September sight was among the smaller sights of 2008, following the sightholders lowered demand in their intentions to offer (ITO’s), due to company closures during the Jewish Holidays and the Diwali festival. The eight sight value of $600 million has been arrived at including value of diamonds at the sights in London, Botswana and Namibia this week, and South Africa’s sight to be held next week at similar levels to previous months. %% DTC is to announce the next sight in the week of November 3.
