Inspired by the age-old and mystical motifs of stars and the moon, Abbas reinterprets the symbols in her characteristic unique and original manner.
Celebrated jewellery designer Shaheen Abbas pays an ode to the festive and wedding season with the launch of her new collection ‘Chaand Tara’. Inspired by the age-old and mystical motifs of stars and the moon, Abbas reinterprets the symbols in her characteristic unique and original manner.
The forces that brighten up the darkness of the night sky, the moon and stars are often associated with romantic notions. Abbas keeps this spirit alive, but gives them a contemporary and edgy update to appeal to the urban woman with her designs. While the collection is traditional at heart, it doesn’t lack an au courant and modish sensibility either. This is a fine jewellery collection that doesn’t eliminate the element of fun altogether.
The ‘Chaand Tara’ collection is high on diamond-studded splendour spruced with the allure of gemstones. Round, baguettes, rose cut and uncut diamonds have been complemented by rubies and emeralds in designs that are all set in 18K gold. Abbas has chosen to make rings and earrings the highlight of her collection. She has played with designs like mismatched earrings, modern versions of the jhumka, stackable rings, choker necklaces, cuffs, and stackable bracelets, with the star and moon motif making a recurring appearance throughout the range. Easy layering and travel-friendly jewellery is at the heart of the collection, as is versatility and wearability. For instance, the diamond choker features removable links so that it can also double up as a bracelet.
“I felt that Indian jewellery had started to get repetitive, so I decided to work with an old concept, but in a new manner. I am strongly against real jewellery that simply lies in the locker and can be worn only during weddings and festivals. My key focus when designing this collection was to keep it edgy, young and stylish. So while it’s clean and modern, it’s also equally unforgettable and statement making. Moreover, its versatility ensures that it can be worn well beyond traditional wear too,” says Abbas about her collection.
