Shairu Gems Diamonds has announced that it has become India’s first cutting and polishing company to supply natural diamonds as CarbonNeutral® products, certified by Natural Capital Partners, a London-based company that sells offsets.

The company says it has continuously strived to pursue a carbon-neutral journey, driven by a set of strong social, ethical and environmental beliefs. Its first milestone was recognised eight months ago when it became the first Indian natural diamond cutting and polishing company to be certified by Natural Capital Partners as a CarbonNeutral® company.

With additional certification from Natural Capital Partners for its products, the company will now be able to certify its diamonds as a completely CarbonNeutral® product.

Shairu’s facility in Surat was certified as a LEED Platinum Level Green New Factory by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in 2019, and in 2020, it received a Net Zero Energy (Design) Rating, based on the building’s performance. As a result, Shairu Gems Diamonds neutralised its carbon footprint through a combination of internal emissions reduction projects and investments in high-quality environmental instruments, which directly contribute to achieving all 17 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The emissions per polished carat is 74.27 kg CO2e, which is 54% less than the estimated average natural diamond polished per carat globally.
