Surat, a global hub in the diamond and jewellery industry, anticipates a significant upswing with the inauguration of India's pioneering B.Sc. program in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), aims to bridge the skill gap prevalent in this rapidly expanding domain.

The curriculum encompasses a comprehensive blend of creative and technical facets of jewellery production. Students undergo intensive practical training, delving into various techniques including hand-made and cast jewellery manufacturing, metalwork, stone setting, jewellery chain and bangle crafting, finishing, jewellery restoration, and metal refinement. Moreover, they acquire proficiency in polished diamond grading, colour gemstone identification, industrial engineering, and import-export protocols. Live projects, seminars, and business-related assignments further augment their comprehension of industry dynamics.

IDI Chairman Dinesh Navadia remarked, "This skill-centric industry has grappled with a dearth of adept professionals. Through our collaboration with the state government's Skill University, we aim to remedy this by introducing the inaugural graduation course dedicated to the diamond and jewellery sector in Surat."

Despite housing over 8,000 diamond manufacturing units and nearly 500 jewellery manufacturing facilities, Surat continues to face challenges in recruiting skilled personnel. The B.Sc. program, launched in conjunction with Gujarat's Kaushalya Skill University, is accessible to students who have completed their secondary education (Class 12) in any stream (Arts, Science, or Commerce).
