From May 1, travellers passing through Mumbai Airport will be allowed to import and export jewellery via private transport, following a formal directive from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The initiative, led by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), is expected to simplify logistics for exporters and boost India's position as a global jewellery hub
Starting May 1, travellers will be able to import jewellery through private transport at Mumbai Airport, marking a major milestone for India's gems and jewellery sector. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) announced the development on Thursday, describing it as a significant achievement for the industry.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) formalised the hand-carry jewellery import and export process on March 28, 2025, according to a PTI report. Under the new regulations, individuals will be allowed to personally carry jewellery for import or export purposes via private transport.
To prepare for the rollout, a mock drill was conducted on April 24, 2025, involving India Diamond Bourse, BVC, Precious Cargo Customs Clearance Center (PCCC), Airport Customs, and GJEPC.
GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali hailed the move as a "new era" for India's gems and jewellery trade. “The launch of hand-carry jewellery exports from Mumbai Airport not only simplifies logistics for our members, especially emerging exporters, but also further strengthens India's position as a major global jewellery hub,” Bhansali said.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit MSMEs and emerging exporters, enabling them to transport jewellery directly to international markets with greater ease. To support members, the GJEPC has also established a dedicated airport office to assist with hand-carry processes.
