Veteran Diamond Industry Leader to Steer IGI’s Next Chapter
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has appointed Anoop Vrajlal Mehta as Chairman and Independent Director of its Board, effective June 6, 2025. The appointment is subject to shareholder approval and signals a strategic move to bring seasoned leadership into the fold as IGI deepens its influence across global gem certification standards.
With more than five decades of experience, Mehta is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential figures in the global diamond trade. He currently heads Mohit Diamonds Pvt. Ltd. as Chairman and Managing Director and serves as President of the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), one of the world’s largest diamond trading hubs. His affiliations span key industry organisations, including the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).
Mehta’s leadership credentials are built on decades of hands-on involvement in India’s gem and jewellery export landscape, and he is credited with driving infrastructure and policy changes that have elevated the country’s role in the global market.
Subject to shareholder approval, the move brings a respected voice and strategic thinker to IGI’s leadership team, reinforcing the organisation’s focus on quality, transparency, and relevance in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
Tehmasp Printer, IGI’s Global CEO, welcomed the appointment, highlighting Mehta’s deep-rooted understanding of the diamond ecosystem. “His insights and vision will be instrumental as IGI strengthens its global footprint and continues to serve as a trusted authority in gemological science,” Printer said.
He added that the appointment reflects IGI’s commitment to good governance and long-term stakeholder value at a time when industry expectations around ethics and certification are rising.
Mehta has long been a central figure in shaping India’s diamond infrastructure. One of his most notable achievements includes spearheading the development of the Bharat Diamond Bourse, which officially opened in 2010. Under his stewardship, the BDB has grown into a pivotal player in global diamond trading.
His contributions have been recognised with several Lifetime Achievement Awards, including honours from the GJEPC, underlining his lasting impact on the trade.
In his remarks on the new role, Mehta acknowledged IGI’s enduring reputation for trust and technical excellence. “In an era where consumer trust and authenticity matter more than ever, IGI’s role is crucial. I’m honoured to support its mission and contribute to its growth story,” he said.
