Created to provide skilled workforce for the jewellery industry currently has only 15 students instead of its capacity of 250. The institute offers courses in jewellery designing and gemology and provides testing facilities too. Even the state-of-art equipment for a range of activities - from computer-aided jewellery designing to testing of diamonds and gems - are well-preserved but wasting away for want of enough students, reports TOI. %%
The report further mentions that it has learnt from reliable sources that lack of a proper campus and inadequate support and funding for publicity and marketing have kept students away. The Comptroller & Auditor General's report on Delhi for year ended March 2013 tells a tale of mismanagement of this facility run by Delhi Government's Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). %%
Around 13 to 57 students were reportedly enrolled at NIJ during 2005-13 and only one piece of gold was tested during 2011-13. The total grant received was Rs 10.84 crore against which Rs 11.65 crore was utilized. The institute had accumulated a loss of Rs 3.20 crore up to 2011-12. CAG asserted that DSIIDC had accepted the report in January this year, states TOI report.%%
The report further states that the one of the concerned official told them that the board has decided to shut down the institute due to low level of interest and participation from students.
