Mumbai based diamond trader Vikay Raysons, stands to lose 34 lakh worth import parcel of rough which was stolen on Friday January 12, 2007.%%Ideally the procedure is that the consignment is first brought at Minerals and Metal Trading Corporation of India, (MMTC) which is the custodian of all the import and export of goods. MMTC forwards the consignments to Clearing House Agents (CHA). Each parcel is then taken from CHA to the Custom Department where they examine as per custom procedures and again they hand it over to CHA which in turn gives it back to MMTC. Thereafter that documents are sent to custom department for final assessment after which the Custom Department gives duplicate copy of Bill of Entry.%%According to sources on the day of the incident there were around 35 parcels which after getting cleared at all the stages when re-checked again at CHA in the evening were found to be less in number!%%On an average approximately 100-150 imports parcels and 300-400 export parcels are received for clearing on any given day.%%As per industry folks the customs area is thronged by a large number of people which makes it vulnerable for any kind of incident.%%On the conditions of anonymity, customs official inform that since the security is very tight in the entire premises, the episode hints involvement of somebody who is in this trade from past few years.%%According to sources, “We are trying to beef up the security check in the entire area. But since the rate of such incidents as compared to the figure of daily clearings is very minimal there is no reason why people should worry.”%%The incident has led to authorities planning to install a Close Circuit Cameras in the entire area.%%Mehul N Shah, partner Star Brillian Pvt Ltd says, “Since the stock goes from one stage to another it becomes very difficult to pin point where exactly the problem lies. On a given day we receive approximately 600 consignments of exports and 150-100 of imports. So it requires good deal of checking at the various stages. The custom house was made in 1987.The volume of business has grown in these years and since the infrastructure is more or less the same, things do require a lot of attention during the peak hours. In order to keep a tab on such mishaps we are planning to get Close Circuit Cameras installed in the area. Also employing more number of people will not help as a check is required to be kept on the people but a lot of care and attention needs to be paid at all stages of clearing of goods.”%%Gem and Jewellery Export promotion Council (GJEPC) chairman, Mr. Sanjay Kothari, says, “According to me question is not the number of thefts that took place are very minimal as compared to he consignments cleared each day, but the cost of the consignment is really high so even if such incidents take place once in many years it is a very big issue and needs to be taken seriously.”%%The investigations are still on in the case.
