Gone are the days when flowers and petals and flora and fauna, inspired designers to create jewellery with nature as its focal point. The times are now asking for an edgier trend that can create a style statement, which is bold and fresh. Shifting their focus from nature to animals and birds, jewellery designers and manufacturers are now steering the design wheel towards intentions that ensure a raw yet glamorous look. Priyanka Desai goes hunting for the best designs and their stories.%% If you are into jewellery trends, it’s time to take a walk on the wild side! Thanks to jewellery designers, the world of nature has been transformed from the living and breathing, to the stately and elegant, appearing as animal and bird inspired rings, pendants and earrings. This season, the biggest trend may indeed be animal-inspired jewellery. Couture designers are creating chunky and delicate, diamond and gemstone laden, snakes, panthers, butterflies, dragonflies and other crawling, running and flying creatures. Call it a trend, but the call of the wild has absolutely taken over runways and walkways alike. %% Jewellery designers are releasing new items in this animal category every day. Consumers love their spirit, and appreciate the details of animal designs. Animals may be fierce when it comes to popularity, but they are only part of this season’s jewellery favorites. Another big-time seasonal must-have includes whimsical beach-type themed items like palm trees and sea life set ablaze with diamonds and gemstones. %% The main jewellery themes of the season appear to have one thing in common, whether you are tiptoeing through the daisies, taming your wild side, or dipping your toes in the sea, animals and bird themed jewellery should be coming along for the ride. %% Nitesh Sehgal, Commercial Director, Blues Jewellery Company too believes this trend is here to stay. Blues Jewellery Company has recently launched a peacock inspired collection that is unique to the core. Peacock as an inspiration has unearthed countless collections from number of jewellers in the past years but the king of the birds still has its reign on consumers’ minds. We asked him if this trend is whetting the Indian consumers’ appetites, to this he opines, “In India, animal inspired jewellery designs date long back and have existed in the market for decades. It’s a ‘classic’ and it doesn’t go out of trend. In addition, even the leading international brands have regularly created animal inspired jewellery designs. But, animal inspired jewellery is certainly not for everyone. It caters to a niche clientele especially for the customers who prefer bold and exotic designs. Women who adorn animal inspired jewellery are the ones with exquisite taste. They are usually bold, confident, and experimental with fashion and trends. Also, the younger consumer very well receives animal-inspired collections. The youth clientele is usually the first to visit our store whenever animal inspired collections are launched.” %%
The renowned jewellery designer Alpana Gujral, has a different take on this aspect. She explains, “The animal-inspired trend was never out of fashion. Since the Mughal era, people have had a fetish for animal shaped jewellery and it was very visible in the outfits and the jewellery they adorned. It was not necessarily for a niche clientele in that era. But, for the recent times, it is safe to say; animal-inspired designs are the fashion spillover of the new season. India is still trending over this genre. On the contrary, this trend is already blooming overseas.” %% Elucidating more about this rage, she says, “Women those who adorn this trend are animal lovers and are very much attached to animals or birds. They love bold designs. They love nature and respect it and the same can be seen in the jewllery they wear.” Sharing with us her favorite animal or bird inspiration she lets out a secret. “I have always liked parrot since it gives a very independent feeling of flying in the sky. In the same way my designs are independently designed keeping in mind the values and traditions.” Gujral shows us her favourite ring and it is rustic, edgy and glamorous, all at the same time. The parrot ring is encrusted with diamonds and instantly emits a stately feeling on wearing it. %% The south of India is known for its love and devotion to temple jewellery. But,Subhas M Kamath, MD & CEO of Abharan Jewellers informs us that the animal and bird motif design jewellery too allures the South. While talking about the type of women who adorn this trend, he explains, “This is an acquired taste by women who dare to be different and are very individualistic by nature. This is a niche clientele found only in pockets, in the metros in India. This jewellery trend had its roots in the 1970s and reappeared recently. Stylists, celebrities and fashionistas wear them. This trend is very versatile, quirky and chic. These pieces can complement any outfit, be it casual or formal.” %% Sanjay Jagwani, Director, Notandas & Sons Jewellers tells us the importance of this trend especially when the industry is facing testing times. “Unique designs and innovations in jewellery can revive the market sentiments. Innovation in jewellery designs always manages to impact consumers as well as the market. Animal and bird inspired jewellery is a big example for this. This trend has been around for a few years, both internationally and in India. Jewellery designers are innovating with other animal species to give jewellery designs a contemporary twist,” he shares. %%
But, it is not always easy to position this edgy type of jewellery in the traditional market of India, we wondered and Sanjay Jagwani concurred. “Animal and bird jewellery trend is a treat for a jewellery lover. This trend is open for everyone but youngsters mostly welcome it, as they are more open to try new trends. In India where we give preference to traditional jewellery for occasions like wedding, festivals, etc. it is quite difficult to position animal and bird inspired jewellery for everyday use,” he explains. %% “Flowers, leaves, nuts, fruits, berries, animals, birds; every gift of Mother Nature have inspired artists for centuries, and jewellery designers at Zaveri & Co are certainly no exception. In fact, many of our in house designers credit nature as a primary source of inspiration for their work. For our designers, the influence of nature is even more apparent. It becomes not just an inspiration for creativity but an integral part of their collection and overall style. The appeal of capturing motifs in jewellery not only takes on the appearance of how the designer views the natural object, but it also infuses the designs,” informs Chandresh Zaveri, Director, Zaveri & Co when quizzed about the vitality of nature in design process. %% Elaborating more about the animal and bird inspired jewellery trend, he says, “For centuries, people have crafted motif-inspired jewellery in appreciation of the world around them. In the Victorian period, romantic notions about the natural world caused a flourish of nature-inspired jewellery and art. Flower jewellery and images of animals were very popular styles; Queen Victoria herself loved snake jewellery and believed that the serpent motif represented fidelity and love. The more people learned about plants, animals, and the oceans, the more they were moved to create motif-style jewellery and nature-inspired jewellery. This kind of jewellery works particularly for its uniqueness and innovativeness.” %%
To conclude this survey, we asked Varuna D Jani to tell us why does she think this trend is a rage right now. “Today, the trend is all about wearing statement jewellery. So when you think of unconventional styles, the first thing that comes to your mind is ‘animal motif’. Also it is something that can be worn on Indian as well as western outfit. Besides, today jewellery is just not an investment but also an important aspect of one’s personality. An animal motif adds the required bling on even the simplest outfit making it a popular trend,” she opines. %% “As a matter of a fact, I would say that this jewellery is for someone who is a trendsetter. There is no age definition of a trendsetter when it comes to jewellery. A person should be young at heart and willing to be a moderniser,” she concludes. %% So, be it the dainty butterflies and peacocks for the sweet damsels or the lions and panthers for the rock chics, make sure that you stock up on the animal-inspired jewellery this season. %%
