In a significant step toward boosting ease of business for India’s gem and jewellery exporters, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) held a key meeting with Principal Chief Commissioner of Customs, Prachi Saroop, on April 17 to advance the implementation of hand-carriage exports from Mumbai International Airport
The meeting marked a crucial moment in the long-standing dialogue between the trade and customs authorities, aiming to streamline the export of high-value goods by allowing exporters to personally carry shipments abroad—an efficient and time-sensitive alternative to traditional cargo methods.
GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali welcomed Saroop and extended his congratulations on her recent promotion to Principal Chief Commissioner. The discussion also included top industry leaders, including Anoop Mehta, President of Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), Mehul Shah, Vice President of BDB, and Mithlesh Pandey, Director – Membership, GJEPC.
One of the central topics was the long-awaited operationalisation of hand-carriage exports—a facility that would empower exporters with greater flexibility, reduce logistical hurdles, and enhance India’s competitiveness in the global jewellery trade.
Saroop acknowledged the industry's needs and confirmed that a mock trial of the hand-carriage system is scheduled for the third week of April 2025. She assured the Council of the Customs Department’s full cooperation in ensuring a smooth rollout and early adoption of the initiative.
With growing global demand and rising export volumes, the gem and jewellery sector views hand-carriage as a critical enabler of efficiency and trust. The meeting signals renewed momentum in turning that vision into a reality.
