|*In the short span of 17 years, Geneva- based de Grisogono has established not only a worldwide retail presence but an enviable reputation internationally as a brand creating unique jewellery and watches. The brand is imbued with many of the characteristics of its founder and owner, Fawaz Gruosi who is fearless in exploring new ideas, innovative, has flair, and an eye for trends.. {{Diamond World}} explores the universe of de Grisogono to find out what makes it tick with such precision.*|%% He was not born to it nor trained for it. But Fawaz Gruosi, with his high end jewellery and watch brand de Grisogono, has taken the luxury world by storm in the less than two decades of its existence.%% Raised in Florence by his Italian mother, the necessity of earning a living, as much as his love for art and all things beautiful, drove Gruosi to drop out of school at the age of 18 and join a Florentine jeweller as a trainee sales assistant. Seven years later, having proved himself, he went on to open a London store for the jeweller as a consultant, and for four years was the store manager of the outlet.
The Alizera family of Italy, official agents for Harry Winston, noticed the bright young man and took him on to represent the brand in Saudi Arabia. Rising successfully to the challenge, Gruosi returned to Italy after three years, where he was enlisted by Bulgari, for a specially created position. The job: selling Bulgari creations all over the globe. This opened up, literally, a world of opportunities as he met the cream of the international jewellery fraternity. The years with Bulgari were rich in experience which was to stand Gruosi in good stead in time to come. %% When Gianni Bulgari left the company, Gruosi too parted ways with it, and decided the time had come to go independent.%% Neither gemmologist not designer, Gruosi’s innate creativity and passion, his instinctive feel for trends, a sharply developed aesthetic sense, and his zest for exploring new areas have been the key to his success.%% Along with two other associates, he set up de Grisogono in 1993. In 1995, Gruosi parted ways with his associates and incorporated de Grisogono S.A. From then on, began an exciting journey which has seen each year marked by one or more milestones for the company.
The first of these in 1996 was his collection of jewellery using black diamonds, which way back then, were neither fashionable nor used by jewellers as they were both rare and brittle. The affair with black diamonds came about by sheer chance. Reading about the famous Black Orlov, Gruosi was captivated by the gem. His imagination was fired by it and the collection that Grisogono produced as a result was a runaway success. So much so that the black diamond has become the emblem of the company.%% The wild success of his black diamond jewellery let to another first in 1999 - a collection of everyday objects with black diamonds, amongst them, a sunglasses and a cellphone studded with 240 diamonds with a total weight of 18 cts. %% Another famous innovation is the creation of “Browny Brown Gold” through the PVD (Physical Vaporisation and Deposit) process. Many of his jewellery pieces are made from this delectable shade of golden-brown with chestnut overtones.%% {{Distinctive Jewellery}}%% De Grisogono jewellery is characterised by its brand personality – it has individuality, flair, élan and a passionate pallete of colours. The gold in yellow, white, pink and brown colours is highlighted with a range of gems from white and black diamonds, to the entire spectrum of coloured gemstones. $$ Jewellery from de Grisogono has two distinctive attributes: the shapes are unusual and imaginative; and it uses a combination of colour, finish and shape in contrasting or complementing manner. This adds aesthetic value as well as uniqueness to the piece. The final piece which emerges is a perfectly balanced and has a touch of that something special which makes it out of the ordinary, and therefore desired by the glitterati and world of celebrities.
Currently, de Grisogono has 18 collections in which different aspects of the brand find expression. Some of the most captivating ones are:%% {{Allegra}}$$ In yellow, white or pink gold, these rings and earrings are made up of a number of thinner bands all seemingly going round and round like a ball of wire or thread. The individual bands are either studded with diamonds or gemstones, or plain; and the jewellery uses one or the other, or the two in combination. The fact that the individual bands are of asymmetrical heights, gives the piece a unique appeal %% {{Bocca }}$$ A finger tingler. Spherical rings as if sliced in the centre which come in studded and non-studded halves. And can be used singly or together for more impact. The beauty lies in the contrasting shapes, use of plain gold or studded, in the two halves and the finish: a convex studded globule or a concave polished plain gold finish. A stunningly simple concept. Profoundly impactful.%% {{Boule}}$4 Joyous movement pervades this collection of different kinds of “balls” or beads, in plain gold or studded gold, and woven with chains into necklaces, and cuffs or strung to make earrings. The studding is to watch out for – though some beads are fully pave set, it is those subtle beads with just random artistically placed gemstones, that add a touch of excitement to the collection.
{{Chiocciola}}$$ These rings made with asymmetric curves in the centre of which are used gemstone briolettes in brilliant colours reflecting off the mirror polish surface of the curving gold base. Modern and zany eyecatchers.%% {{Fruits }}$$ A plate of fruit made from gemstones. It’s a fun collection which includes a pair of red apple earrings with one bite taken off each and the bitten off portion studded with diamonds!%% {{Galuchat}}$$ The stingray or sharkskin based cuffs highlighted with gemstones or metal pieces of various shapes and colours%% {{Zigana}}$$ Again a delightful play between shape and colour, the jewellery from this collection has a two types of view when worn – undulating golden waves or the meanderings of a river of gemstones. %% Other collections also equally fascinating, are Contrario, Gocce, Docce d’acqua, Gipsi, Labirinto, Matassa, Onde, Segreto, Tourbillon, Violetta
{{Ticking Times}}$$ In the year 2000, de Grisogono created another milestone by introducing its first watch collection, which was launched at the Basel Show that year - Instrumento N Uno, The company was also the first to introduce galuchat watch straps.$$ Since then the company has launched about 20 collections - timepieces for both men and women, some serious, some fun. But all are by now acclaimed and have a following. And like its jewellery each one is distinctive.$$ The jewel of the timepieces is the limited edition {{Occhio Ripetizone Minuti.}} A wristwatch, it is a minute repeater featuring church gongs. It has a 12-blade diaphragm which opens like a camera shutter and shows the movement when the gong chimes.
The other limited edition watch, the {{Meccanico DG}} has a patented double time display in both analog and digital formats. It’s design is considered a novel concept in mechanical Haute Horlogerie.$$ It has eight other collections for men including the original Instrumento N Uno, Instrumento Grande Open Date, Instrumento Grande, Instrumento Doppio Tre, Instrumentino, Fulso Quadrato, FG One, Instrumento Novantatre and a travel clock. $$ Amongst the nine women’s collections, while some are the counterparts of the men’s collections, some are fun and utterly feminine like {{Be Eight}} and {{Lipstick}}. Be Eight with the dial shaped like the figure eight, has a rim to the dial studded with stones and straps in matching colours. Lipstick has a dial mounted on various shaped lispstick holders studded with gemstones. %% {{The Sum of its Parts}}$$ Today the company has a 17 boutiques and a retail presence in different parts of the world. It has boutiques in the US, Europe, India (in New Delhi), Middle East, China and the Far East. It’s luxury products are available through retailers in many more places, including also, Canada, and Australia apart from those above. De Grisogono has its own manufacturing capabilities for both jewellery and watches. $$ Since it was first set up in 1993, de Grisogono has achieved “constant and sustained growth, averaging more than 25% yearly”, according to the company. With turnover of CHF 135 million in 2007, when it celebrated its 15th anniversary, its own manufacturing and an established reputation for the brands it produces, de Grisogono has every reason to be confident about the future. All it has to do is keep up the same pace and standard of innovation in both the jewellery and watches segment. The rest is easy. It just rolls up.
