Copyrights, patents, trademarks, are few of the terms that are making rounds in the gem and jewellery industry, today. When it comes to design and jewellery, it is important to understand that these products and services fall under the term, ‘Intellectual Property’. Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) made an effort to increase the awareness in this respect by holding a successful seminar on Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on 28 September 2012. %% Deepak Mehra led the seminar - an expert in this field led the seminar who educated representatives of the Industry and the students on this new subject. An electrical engineer by profession, Deepak Mehra chose the path less trodden and specialised in this subject after working with L&T for 15 years. During his working tenure he explored the process of patenting that later became his inspiration and aim to combine Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights. %% Innovative jewellery designs or manufacturing techniques are invaluable to its creator. It is important that they should be guarded against the unauthorized use by filing patents with proper governmental agencies. Through this workshop Mehra helped the students understand the importance, difference and application of Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights. The seminar was not only an audiovisual presentation but also very interactive. A group discussion was conducted to further clear the students’ doubts. %% This workshop was the need of the hour and IIGJ helped to throw light on this important aspect of the industry. The students and industry representatives were seen enthralled by the seminar. %%
