The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has introduced a transformative measure by designating Amritsar Airport as an authorised export point for gold, silver, and platinum jewellery
In a landmark development for India’s jewellery export sector, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has officially included Amritsar Airport as an authorised export point for gold, silver, and platinum jewellery. This update was issued on 13th November 2024 through an amendment to the Handbook of Procedures, 2023, and aims to simplify export processes for jewellers in Punjab and neighbouring states.
The move, driven by consistent advocacy from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), is expected to significantly enhance regional growth and export efficiency. Previously, exporters from Punjab had to rely on Delhi Customs for the appraisal of their export parcels, resulting in logistical delays and increased costs.
GJEPC Chairman Hails Government Support
Vipul Shah, Chairman of GJEPC, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We sincerely thank the government for supporting ease of doing business in the gem and jewellery sector. Amritsar has a rich heritage in Meenakari and Jadau jewellery, and this decision eliminates logistical challenges for exporters in the region. It will allow for faster and more efficient export processes, creating immense opportunities for jewellers and artisans.”
Shah also highlighted the growing demand for Indian Jadau jewellery, particularly in Dubai, following the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). He remarked, “This initiative is timely, as Jadau jewellery is witnessing a surge in international demand. Amritsar Airport's inclusion will further support exporters in reaching global markets while promoting the region’s traditional craftsmanship.”
A Boost for Northern India’s Exporters
Until now, jewellery exports were restricted to airfreight and Foreign Post Offices operating from Customs Houses in 12 cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, and Jaipur. The addition of Amritsar Airport addresses a long-standing limitation for exporters in northern India, enabling them to ship goods directly without additional logistical hurdles.
GJEPC Marks Gurupurab with Gratitude
Concluding his remarks, Shah added, “On the sacred occasion of Gurupurab, this announcement is a meaningful gift for the gem and jewellery community in Punjab. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the government for this thoughtful decision.”
The amendment, effective immediately, is expected to boost jewellery exports, promote regional craftsmanship, and strengthen India’s position in global markets for high-value artisanal jewellery.
