Jewellery artisan Subhasis Paul of Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers (VBJ) won a Medallion for Excellence in the Jewellery category at the WorldSkills 2022 competition held in Geneva, Switzerland from 13th to 16th October. The Jewellery Skill is evaluated on the basis of crafting gold and other precious metals and gemstones, using a variety of techniques to create fashion accessories. Subhasis scored a total of 708 points, placing 6th in the overall competition. Participants from Iran, Korea and the UK won the gold, silver and bronze awards respectively in the Jewellery category. Contestants from France, Japan and Switzerland were the three other recipients of the Medallion for Excellence.
Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India or GJSCI, along with industry partners, trains representatives for the WorldSkills jewellery competitions. After completing his higher secondary education, Subhasis had joined the South India heritage jewellery house, VBJ in Chennai, for jewellery training. After completing his basic and advanced training, Subhasis progressed through state, regional, and national competitions and was finally selected out of three candidates for WorldSkills training, GJSCI informed.
